Once a year is record store day or every day is record store day, some celebrate it others hate it. However at least some doubts remain if its truly a benefit to industry and collectors if pressing plants are blocked for weeks and months by orders from major labels while smaller independent labels have to promise their customers that there are unfortunate delays on the delivery.Furthermore every year plenty of reissues pop-up where originals sit on the shelve and could easily find a new home, some gimmicky extras taken to justify another pressing.
I didn't find a way to a record store last Saturday but from the list of RSD2018 hip-hop vinyl there were 2, 3, 4 release that deserve to be named.
At first there is the re-release of Compton's Most Wanted's debut LP "Music To Driveby". For the original from 1992 price moved up to $100 and with 1000 copies re-pressed its a good opportunity to add a great album to the collection for a decent price.
Then there is the live recording of the Nas classic album "Illmatic" which seems to have a good sound quality and gives the whole album a different touch from live instruments.
Last but not least Columbia released Prodigy's "Keep It Thoro" 12inch as picture disc edition. Actually a limited pressing of 3000 copies doesn't deserve the term "limited" but for fans paying homage to a brilliant MC who passed away far too young it might be a nice piece of wax that doesn't really offer something new apart from the design of the vinyl. Maybe a purchase driven by emotions, rather than a rational cost-benefit analysis.
